Addmotor Motan M5800 1000W Electric Bike Review

By Teddy

Addmotor Motan Electric Bike M5800 is indeed Addmotor’s most powerful e-bike – and surpasses almost all the available e-bikes in the market today. This is marketed as an Electric Mountain Bike (e-MTBs), and mountain bikes tend to be very strong. Some websites refer this bike as a “monster truck of e-MTBs”. If Harley Davidson ever manufactured E-Bikes this is the one they are going to study first!

Most surprising thing is that this e-bike is not even street-legal in some jurisdictions. It falls in Class 4 of Moped and Motorcycles.

With an overall black color body having orange/red stripes on the tires’ rims – this black beauty definitely gives its riders an unforgettable muscular macho look.

Addmotor Motan Electric Bike – A powerful macho Motan Ebike

Because of M5800’s popularity, Addmotor released a 1000W 2019 version of this bike. It is M-5500 – the design of which (M5500) commemorates the Flying Tigers, which the United States volunteered together to aid Air Force in the Second World War. The shark mouth logo on the frame is the symbol of the Flying Tigers.

This is the only Addmotor Motan Electric Bike and might be the first electric bike – which serves as a tribute to National Forces.

To purchase Addmotor Motan M5800 – you need not to read this bike’s in-depth specification review. And get it from Amazon and no-where else! The price on Amazon is almost same as on all e-bike stores, but no one matches Amazon’s product service.

Bafang 1000W Hub Motor

5800 features a high-torque 48V 1000W mid-drive motor of “Bafang” brand. 1000W is just amazing! The power and the thrust it provides is just incredible. The bike reaches from 0 to 30mph in no time – and climbs mountains and hills like plains!

Secondly it is but obvious that a bulky bike with a large surface area will experience a lot of drag. Keeping it in mind Addmotor has designed this powerful motor. It gives you a pro-start even if you are stuck in a snowy muddy or sandy terrain.

With level one pedal assist you can get this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike riding for 55-65 miles. And the maximum speed that you can reach is 30 mph when on electric mode and 20 mph on pedaling mode.

The best part about the motor is the “Variable Gear Sensor” and the “Torque Sensor”. As you change gears the motor senses it and provides the power accordingly. And the torque sensor works just perfect in starting and stopping the motor in accordance to your pedaling. This makes it almost an alternative to motorbikes.

The motor can support a maximum weight of 350 lbs, which is approximately 160 kg. This means that it can be ideally ridden with a partner at your back. For this very reason the bike comes installed with a backseat.

Note – Addmotor Motan Electric Bike 750W – the MOTAN M-850 P7 does not include a backseat.

48v 1000w Lithium Ion Battery

The best thing about this bike is that it does not feature only a powerful motor – but comes paired with an equally robust 48V/17.5Ah strong battery. In fact the battery is more powerful than the motor. The battery pack is removable and comes with high quality rechargeable Panasonic cells.

With the installed battery you don’t need to carry an extra battery with you – The 17.5 amp hour battery pack, offering 840 watt hours of power has much more capacity than the average 500 watt hours of power batteries.

Another good thing is the position of the motor and the battery on this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike. Both are placed low and at the very center which makes it downside heavy. This gives the bike an overall stability and makes it anti-skid on snowy and rainy roads.

Caution – As the motor and battery are placed low, be careful on pits and speed breakers. The battery and motor are not protected with any kind of casing so if you are fast on the speed breakers the roads might bump them.

The only issue with the battery is that it is a little bulky. The weight of the battery is 8.5 lbs or 3.85 kg. So carrying an additional battery with you will be an extra load on your shoulders.

But the positive to it is that Addmotor had made the battery removable, which means you can uninstall it from the bike whenever you don’t want additional weight – for example when tucking it on a truck – or when you just want to go on a pedal ride, without the electric mode.

Removing and installing the battery is very easy in comparison to other Addmotor Motan Electric Bikes.

The battery comes with a 2.5 Amp Charger. Although it is better than the average 2.0 Amp Chargers, but still the heavy battery and heavy motor needed a 4.0 Amp Charger. It takes a little more than 6 hours for the battery to get completely charged.

Build quality

You don’t need to question the build of the bike. It justifies its nickname as an EMTB Truck. The frame is made up of premium aluminum alloy and the frame size is 19 inches which is approximately 49 cm.

The bike comes in two shade variants – Black with Orange Accents and Black with Red Accents. Overall black finishing with these two colors Accents gives it a formal cum trendy look.

Advanced MOZO Spring Suspensions and Compression Adjust with Lockout makes it an overall convenient travel mode.

Other Accessories

The tires are huge! And in reality with this large sized built bike you need the legs to be muscular! 4 inch wide tires and MOZO spring suspensions provides a good balance to the bike. The large surface area of the tires provides massive air volume and lots of traction to this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike.

Backlit LDC display by Bafang C961 is also very attractive and provides all the vital information in front of you including speed, assist level (0-5), battery level (1-4), trip distance and total distance.

The bike is properly illuminated. It has a headlight and a taillight, which can be operated by the push of a button. Both the lights require three AAA to run and are very helpful increasing visibility at night.

Price ad final thoughts

With all the premium features and the convenience that MOTAN M-5800, I personally feel that the bike is very low prices. A bike which can be easily priced at $4000 costs somewhere around $2,700 or $2800.

The real factor about Addmotor’s low pricing policy is that companies like Addmotor don’t have the overhead of physical shops which enables them to slash the price to the last digits possible. $2700 might definitely not be the most affordable price, but if you were to pick this electric bike up in a shop it would cost quite a bit more and then quality comes with a price.

And if you are looking to buy a budgeted bike – with robust features than any of these 3 Addmotor Motan Electric Bikes are the best option.

Cons

The biggest negative feature that I hate to point out is the bikes’ legality status. In some countries and states it’s likely not legal on sidewalks, bike lanes and most trails and you need some basic licensing. This is the only thing that makes it a little inconvenient.

The second negative is the self-assembly burden. You have to install and put all the parts and pieces together. First of all it is time consuming and secondly if you don’t know how to do it – you will end up messing the bike altogether.

What I personally prefer is expending some dollars and asking a pro-mechanic to install it for me. And if you have a regular mechanic for servicing of your bikes and vehicles he might assemble it for free.

The back-lit display is not removable which means that you can’t adjust it your way, and the other factor is the way it gets hit by glare, so in sunny days most of the times you cannot properly read the displayed figures.

There is an issue with the Throttle cable as well. The manufacturing quality seems a bit low as compared to the overall parts of this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike.

Pros

We have already discussed a lot about bike’s positive features. Let us shortly look at the most important ones.

The bike comes directly delivered from the manufacturer – with no whole-sellers and retailers involved – which saves a lot of your dollars. You get quality material at a meager cost.

The overall built and premium features makes it an all-terrain bike. Ride it in the woods, or on icy roads, or on hilly Rocky Mountains – you will not feel a thing on this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike!

The masculine figure of the bike is justified, so if you want to invest in a good powerful bike, go for it without a blink. It will not loose its presence on the road for more ten or so years!

Addmotor Motan 750W: Review Of An Awesome Electric Bike

By Teddy

Addmotor is a huge brand which manufactures quality electric bikes since a decade. The company became a hit with its “Addmotor Motan Electric Bike” series – of which Addmotor Motan 750W, Addmotor Motan 1000W and Toretto lead the overall sales. Several consumers believe that owning an Addmotor Motan Electric Bike is somewhere near to owning a Honda.

There are total 17 models under the series of “Motan Electric Bikes” or commonly known as “Motan Ebikes”. All the motan ebikes are powerful and muscular products – especially crafted and manufactured for long time riders.

Motan Electric Bikes – differ from other Addmotor Bikes in terms of Quality. Addmotor is a manufacturer of several electric bikes but the Motan Ebikes – series includes only the flagship models.

The company used to sell motorcycle fairings and motorcycle parts since 2006, and then they released their own brand electric bikes. Years of experience in the development of electric vehicles paid off when their first models got great acclamation. The most famous bikes by Addmotor are Addmotor Motan Electric Bikes and second in number are Addmotor HitHots.

In this review we are going to compare three of Motan Electric Bikes’ – most praised models by masses – Addmotor Motan Electric Bike 750W, Addmotor Motan Electric Bike 1000W and its very recent release Addmotor Motan Electric Bike 3000W, commonly known as “Toretto”.

Addmotor Motan Electric Bike 750W – Best Value Electric Bike

The Addmotor Motan 750W has three models

  • Motan M-150 – folding electric bike
  • MOTAN M-550 P7
  • MOTAN M-850 P7

All these models are the upgraded version of Addmotor Motan M 60 – which has a 500W motor. These three bikes have 750W motors. In this post we are going to look out for the Motan M-850 P7.

Motan M-850 P7 is a wonderful bike among all other Addmotor Motan Electric Bikes -and comes with some revolutionizing features. The most noticeable feature about this Motan Ebike is that it’s a versatile model, which can be used for sports, going to college or work, and even if you want to go on a recreational ride.

Bafang 750w Hub Motor

Motan 850 P7 comes with a Bafang 48V/750W powerful brushless motor which is attached at the rear hub of the bike. This provides the e-bike with a lot of power. The motor enables the vehicle to reach a maximum of 27mph of speed, and helps ascend the bike with all the weight upon hilly regions in a faster and easier way. With this motor you can cover a distance of up-to 55 miles.

With this motor the bike can support a maximum weight of 350lbs – making this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike the best option for larger riders.

If you are not a large rider, than go for Motan 850 P7 with a 500W motor. All the features are identical in the 500W and 750W versions except for a downsize motor.

Note – Motor of Motan 850 P7 comes with one year manufacturer’s warranty.

48v Lithium Ion Battery

This Addmotor Motan Electric Bike comes with 48V/11.6Ah removable lithium battery pack with Panasonic cells, with a 2.5 amp DC smart charger.

On a single full charge (the battery takes around 4-5 hours to get fully charged) the bike can be driven for over 40 miles at level 1 pedal assist. Rechargeable batteries of this bike last for over 800 lifetimes charge cycles.

Note: In my personal experience full battery lasted me for around 55 miles. But note that results can be varying based on rider weight, terrain, weather conditions, and other factors.

Note – Battery of Motan 850 P7 comes with one year manufacturer’s warranty.

TX55 Metal Gear

The bike comes installed with Shimano 7 Speeds TX55 Gears, which means you can choose which speed to ride on. Secondly these gears make it a perfect commute material for difficult terrains and unpaved roads.

The metal gear in this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike is the reason for its increased popularity and rising demands.

Studded Fat Bike Tires

With Kenda 26″ X 4.0″ Juggernaut Sport fat tires the bike can cruise through all kinds of terrains. Addmotor advertises this bike as an all terrain bike. You will be able to easily ride with better grip on mountains or rocky up-hills, beaches or sandy places and even on snowy roads.

Addmotor Motan 750W Build quality

The bike is built using 6061 aluminum-alloy frame. The sporty, compact frame features a strong, curved top tube anchored at both ends with long travel suspension. The frame and swing arm are both curved for styling, strength and clearance of the tires.

It comes with branded suspension forks and braking system, with a quick release 30cm Seat Post which makes this Addmotor Motan Electric Bike idle for 5’11”-6’10” and makes long distance riding very comfortable.

Design and Display

Sturdy and macho built and two colors options gives this e-bike a reason to turn the eyes around. Besides that a 5 inches LCD display which is paired alongside a superb USB charging Port gives it a modern look and importantly makes vital information available in front of your eyes. The charging port ensures that none of your gadgets run out of battery while you are on the go.

Price

Along with all its features (necessary and luxury) its price is fair and just. The price has been subsidized so that anyone wanting budget bikes can enjoy the full pleasure and joy that comes with riding an e-bike. The bike comes with a highly competitive price – making it affordable for everyone, and Amazon always offers a discount on this model. One of the reasons – is that 850 P7 is one of Amazon’s best selling models. Click the link below to check its final on road price.

Pros and Cons of Motan 750W

With a lot of pros which are extensively discussed above there is some cons of this bike.

  • The bike does not come with a back-light, which makes night riding a bit difficult.
  • Secondly some consumers say that this bike is a little heavy to ride on. (I have included this point as a con but my personal experience does not justify this.)
  • Lastly the bike is not very easy to assemble, so you will require a technician initially to help you put all parts in its place.

Note – make sure that you use a greasing agent on all threaded parts while assembling.

Final Verdict for Motan Best Value Electric Bike

Overall this is a wonderful bike. The quality and branded parts used in its manufacture – makes it a durable product and a long lasting vehicle.

Personally when our team inspected this bike they found it worth its money and secondly even the consumers are very happy with its on road performance.

All this makes it a perfect buy for someone looking for a sturdy durable e-bike.

What are Electric Bikes and how do they work? Answered

By Teddy

Electric Bikes are sweeping the markets! They are the new fashion in commuting! But before you ask yourself what are Electric Bikes and How they Work – you need to get a little understanding about Motor Bikes and Cars.

Motor Bikes were designed in the early 1900’s. Although they are very useful there are 2 major drawbacks to their use. Primarily they make the environment very polluted.

Cars are more convenient – but cramping spaces and parking issues add up to the above discussed problems. And both (Cars and Motor Bikes) are very heavy on your pockets. An average family can ONLY afford one of each.

Adding the luxury, speed and convenience of a Motor Bike and a Car – and subtracting the negatives that these two offer – a more economic range of commuting vehicles were invented – AN ELECTRIC BIKE. After its launch it successfully experienced rapid sales growth since 1998.

It is estimated that about 260,000 electric bicycles were sold to customers in the United States in 2017. Global sales of e-bikes are forecasted to reach approximately 40 million units in near 2024.

Asia, USA and Europe are counted among the most important manufacturers and sellers for this commodity.

These projections (based on market forecasts by Navigant Research) – show that the demand of e-bikes will continue to rise. Owing to its usefulness and most importantly health and environment benefits a lot of populations are making it a better choice for their day to day commute.

But before you look for forward to buy one – understand what an e-bike is and how it works.

What is an e-bike?

According to oxford dictionaries an e-bike is “A bicycle that can be run on electric power as well as by pedaling.”

Macmillan Dictionary describes it better. They quote it as “an electric bike which has a motor to power it or to help with pedaling.”

Electric Bikes are electrically assisted bikes. You can run them on electrical mode and can pedal them too.

So basically your bicycle is not just your gymnasium equipment anymore. It can be used as a super commuter option – which you can use to go for your work and your college, to complete your household chores, and sometimes even just for a recreational drive along with your friends.

A lot many bikes are available in the market. If you are ever looking to buy an electric bike – choose the best one. No doubt, that the best ones come with a price tag, but just imagine yourself with a punctured heavy bike on a mountain terrain! You will be definitely stuck!

One such experience is going to shell out all the money you saved while buying a low quality inexpensive e-bike. And you will be lasted with bitter and inconvenient biking experience for the life time. So better buy the best – the first time and enjoy it for life time.

Basic Parts (Components) of an E-Bike

An e-bike is a very simple yet incredibly clever invention. Any e-bike needs seven key parts to get going.

  • Motor
  • Battery
  • Sensors
  • Frame
  • Tires
  • Brakes
  • Derailleur (Gearing System)

Let us look at each one of them in detail

Motor

This is the heart in the innovative design of an E-Bike. Basically the engineers have put a battery driven Electric Motor in tradition bicycles and given you this convenient tool – An ELECTRIC BIKE!

So what does a motor do?

Like any other motor driven vehicles for example cars and motor bikes – a motor rotates its wheels. An e-bike has compact electric motors built into the hub of the back or front wheel and sometimes mounted in the center of the bike and connected to the pedal sprocket.

Electricity produces rotational motion in the axle of the motor. This axle is connected to wheels. As it spins, it spins the wheels along. Simple Physics! A decent motor can provide you with 15-20 miles of speed per hour.

Electric Bike Motor can be placed  in the front hub, rear hub and mid-drive portions of the bike. Each placement has its own benefits.

If you know a little bit of engineering you can design an electric bike for yourself. It never needs rocket science engineering.

In fact i myself has converted one of my regular bicycle into an electric bike. Amazon offers a lot many conversion kit. I am sharing below the link to the best quality conversion kit, if you want to check it out.

(My electric bike is converted by using the above linked Bafang’s conversion kit. It has a super power motor and a long lasting battery.)

Battery

To keep the motor running you need an electrical battery. If motor is the heart, than a battery is like lungs of your vehicle.

This is the equipment where your electrical energy is stored. E-Bikes are equipped with re-chargeable electrical batteries, which make about 350–500 W of power (that’s about 35–50 volts and 10 amps).

A good battery can last you an average of 35 – 50 miles. If you want to go on a long trip, you can carry additional batteries with you.

E-Bikes need light weight batteries unlike four wheel vehicles. This rules out the use of heavy lead-acid batteries like the ones that start cars.

Although some electric bikes do use them – but those are the least preferred ones, as half of your battery energy is used in carrying the weight of the battery itself.

Lithium-ion batteries which are generally used in computers and mobile phones are the most preferred ones. They can be easily plugged in and charged and do not need any other water or chemical replacements.

Although slightly expensive than the traditional rechargeable battery technologies such as nickel-cadmium they have become the popular choice – because they make your biking experience very convenient and pleasurable.

Preferably buy e-bikes having battery and motor of topmost quality. If these two are strong, you will always be content with your bikes’ performance.

Take utmost care of your electric bike battery. Electric Bike Charging needs to be perfect. Do not alter its charge cycles and store it properly.

And if possible buy plastic covers for your motor and battery – this protects them from showers in rainy seasons and from dew, moisture and heat in other weathers.

Sensor

Sensors are very important especially in modern electric bikes. Sensors come in two types.

  1. Speed Sensor or a Cadence Sensor
  2. Torque Sensor

As you start pedaling your electric bike – a speed sensor commonly known as Cadence Sensor activates the motor of the bike.

Torque sensor  is to match your speed when you’re moving. It’s much more responsive than a speed sensor.

Torque Sensor measures your actual force on the pedal. The harder you pedal more power it gives to the motor. If you pedal with less force, less power goes to the motor.

All these adjustment happen in real time. It samples your pedal stroke at 1,000 times per second. Your every input effects the motor.

Remember this one line which differentiates between these two sensors. A cadence sensor measures whether you are pedaling or not. A Torque Sensor measures how hard you are pedaling.

Frame

Frame makes the anatomical structure of your bike. Modern road bikes are made of one of these four materials: steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. Some bikes have a blend of these.

Aluminum alloy is most commonly used because it is lighter in weight than steel. Titanium and carbon fiber being lighter and more durable than aluminum are used in high end expensive e-bikes.

Remember a thumb rule when you are looking for frame in a bike.

This is for multiple reasons – but the reasons which concern you the most are:

Lighter bikes are easier to ride, as they put less strain on your thighs, and they can easily reach top speeds.

And secondly the lighter the weight the more mileage it covers on electric mode.

Make sure that the material of your frame is anti-rust type, as rust is the most harmful enemy of these vehicles.

Brakes

In traditional, not very high end, mid range e-bikes calliper brakes are used. You must have definitely seen them in children bikes’.

The working mechanism of these is very simple. Two arms having thick pads on their end rest on either side of the tires. When you apply brakes the pads wedge themselves against the rim of the tires – making them slow down or bringing them to a halt.

Modern, high end, quality e-bikes are installed with Disc Brakes. Disc brakes have rotors attached to wheel hubs. When a brake lever is used, it activates (by cable or hydraulic pressure) a mechanism that engages the pads and they get attached against the rotor, providing the stopping power.

Disc brakes are always preferable for two reasons:

Braking mechanism is very efficient – and if you are riding on highways or mountain bikes you need disc brakes. The traditional brakes can only work for street riding.

Disc brakes are good on your tires. Calliper brakes affects the rubber of your tires making them corrode, while disc brakes don’t.

Quick Tip – There should be at least 1.5 mm of braking material on either side of the rotor. If there is anything less – it’s time for you to replace the pads.

Tires

Tiresare a very important part of your e-bike. They are the legs of your bike and the ones which connect your bike to ground. They provide traction and suspension, and affect the way the bike feels and handles.

E-Bike tires matters more than regular bikes tires, because e-bikes are heavier than the regular ones and you will be travelling at high speed on an e-bike. Most probably you must be riding on difficult hilly and dusty terrains too.

So for all this – high-performance tires are essential to ensure safety and comfort.

Generally tires come in two sizes – 26 inches and 20 inches. 26 inches are wide fat tires which increases the ride quality and stability. Most importantly it enhances the gearing of your bike. So try to go for wide tires.

One hindrance to the pleasures of your overall biking experience is a puncture in tire tube. If available go for tube less tires, because it is very inconvenient to fix a puncture hole.

Derailleur (Gearing System)

Most of the websites will make you confuse about what exactly aDerailleur is. We will explain it to you in the easiest possible way.

According to Oxford Dictionary – a Derailleur is ” A bicycle gear which works by lifting the chain from one sprocket wheel to another of a different size.” Believe me this is the easiest definition on the web.

Modern e-bikes like motor bikes are equipped with gearing systems, which allow you to control your speed. Gearing system includes a shifter, a chainset  and a derailleur.

Your point of contact in this whole gear changing system is with the shifter. As you click or move the shifter the derailleur derails and adjusts the chain to fit in the sprockets attached to the front and rear wheels.

Each shift-lever adjusts a cable that determines the position of the derailleur. And the chain in the sprockets controls the speed. If you prefer hill-climbing then this part is the most essential tool in your bike.

How does an electric bike work?

Simple Physics process will make you understand how an electric bike works. –

  • The battery provides electric charge to the motor.
  • Motor powers the drivetrain.
  • You have the control to the outer parts like brakes and speed shifters.
